Set up with intention
A few settings.
A more thoughtful setup.
Start with how your family actually watches. Then check the controls on each profile, app, and device.

Think in layers
A streaming profile, a television’s settings, and the device’s purchase controls can do different jobs. Check each layer your child can actually use.
Your setup checklist
- List the ways to watch. Include the television, streaming apps, games console, phones, tablets, and web browsers. One locked profile does not cover every route.
- Choose the right profiles. Review the maturity setting or child experience in each service. Look for title blocking where offered.
- Protect adult access. Where available, use profile locks or PINs and review who can change the settings. Keep account passwords separate from shared device access.
- Review purchases and playback. Look for purchase approvals, autoplay options, and the behaviour of previews. The exact controls depend on the service and device.
- Try the child’s view. Open the profile they will use and check whether they can switch to another profile or app. Recheck after major account or device changes.
Start with the official instructions
Menu names and available features change. Use your provider’s current help page for the account, device, and country you use. A setting described for one subscription or device may not exist on another.
What controls cannot do for you
Restrictions can help narrow access. They do not replace choosing programmes together or talking about something surprising. Shared accounts, another device, or a different app can change what is available.
Make the household rule as clear as the technical setting: who can choose a title, what needs a check with an adult, and how someone can pause or stop without feeling embarrassed.
Make review part of the routine
Keep a simple note of the services you have checked, without recording passwords in it. Revisit the choices when your child’s interests change, when you add a new device, or when a service changes its options.
